![]() 2007: Andrea Knox, Jonathan Gribbin, & Maitram Nguyen ![]() The Woodland Hills Academic Foundation announced its 2007 Senior Scholarship award winners at the Senior Honors Banquet held at the Olympia Hall in East Pittsburgh last week. This year’s winners are Andrea Knox of Swissvale, Jonathan Gribbin of Churchill, and Maitram Nguyen of Wilkins. Each received a $750 award toward their first year tuition. This year, in part because of a generous donation by State Senator and Mrs. Jay Costa of Forest Hills, WHAF was able to increase the number of scholarships awarded. Andrea plans to attend the Community College of Allegheny County in their nursing program. Jonathan will attend the Los Angeles Film School to study film production. Maitram plans to also attend CCAC to study business. The Woodland Hills Academic Foundation congratulates this year’s recipients and wishes them the best in their future. As part of their mission to support academic opportunities to Woodland Hills students, WHAF awards scholarships to deserving seniors who will be continuing their education at a technical, vocational, or educational program that has a diploma, certificate, or associate degree upon completion. These students usually face costs similar to four-year college students, but have significantly fewer scholarship opportunities. The foundation felt these awards would be the final step in their mission, as well as help promote a broader goal of lifelong learning. Tax deductible donations to the Scholarship Fund can be mailed to WHAF at P.O. Box 321, Turtle Creek, PA 15145. ![]() 2006: Laaun Campbell-Escalante & Ashley Dixon ![]() The Woodland Hills Academic Foundation announced the winners of its 2006 Senior Scholarships at the Woodland Hills High School Honors Banquet on Wednesday, April 26, 2006. Graduating seniors Ashley Dixon and Laaun Campbell-Escalante each received a $750 award toward their first year tuition. The amount of the scholarships was increased this year from $500 because of a generous donation by State Senator and Mrs. Jay Costa of Forest Hills. Ashley plans to attend the Community College of Allegheny County and study computer programming and Laaun is planning to attend the Western School Of Health and Business and would like to become a dental assistant, and perhaps continue her education beyond that. Chris Longwill and Maria McCool, WHAF Board members and co-chairs of the Scholarship Committee, were also on hand to honor the awardees. 2005: Chad Sekely & Alicia Bloise ![]() The Woodland Hills Academic Foundation announced its 2005 Senior Scholarship award winners at the recent Senior Honors Banquet held at the Olympia Hall in East Pittsburgh. This year’s winners are Chad Sekely of Turtle Creek and Alicia Bloise of Rankin. As part of their mission to support academic opportunities to Woodland Hills students, WHAF has decided to award scholarships to deserving students who will be continuing their education at a technical, vocational, or educational program that has a diploma, certificate, or associate degree upon completion. These students usually face costs similar to four year college students, but, WHAF has found, have significantly fewer scholarship opportunities. The foundation felt these awards would be the final step in their mission, as well as help promote a broader goal of lifelong learning. Alicia plans to attend the Median School of Allied Health Careers in Pittsburgh to become a veterinary technician. While at Woodland Hills she supplemented regular coursework with electives in science and zoology. She was also a four year member of the bowling team. She is active in her church and has a part time job. Chad plans to attend Wyotech in Blairsville to become an autobody and custom fabrication technician. In addition to his Woodland Hills classes, he attends Forbes Road Vo Tech and also has a part time job. Chad was recently inducted into the National Technical Honor Society, the highest award for excellence in career and technical education. The Woodland Hills Academic Foundation is proud to award these scholarships to this year’s recipients and wishes them the best in their future. 2004: Angela Sanders & Lindsay Edinger ![]() WHAF has awarded $500 scholarships to two outstanding members of the Class of 2004. Angela Sanders lives in Swissvale. She plans to attend the Academy of Culinary Arts at the Indiana University of PA and hopes to own her own business someday. Angela has been a very active participant in high school activities. She traveled around the country with the Woodland Hills High School Marching Band, appearing in the Hollywood Parade in Los Angeles, CA and competing at the Fiesta Bowl national band competition in Phoenix, Arizona. She was also a member of the high school varsity bowling team. She was just as busy outside of school, participating in the Upward Bound program, the “Opportunity Knocks” program at Slippery Rock University, and enjoys singing in her church choir. Lindsay Edinger lives in Turtle Creek and has also been a very involved student at Woodland Hills High School. She has been on Student Council since eighth grade and participates in the Interact Club which performs community service. She has lettered all four years on the varsity soccer and swimming teams, and she was co-captain of the girls soccer team this year. She has three part-time jobs, yet her grades are high enough for her to be a member of the National Honor Society. Lindsay plans on attending the Community College of Allegheny County to study nursing, a career that she knows requires a lot of compassion and caring. |
